Gamera takes out Kyoto

Roger Simon has been photoblogging from Japan. Start here and work your way down. The train station he refers to in Kyoto I just saw in Gamera 3: The Revenge of Iris (so it's not a set!). Gamera is Daei studio's answer to Toho's Godzilla (Gamera is a giant turtle with a really bad attitude and rockets in its legs), so the plot basically involves giant monsters battling each other and taking out several major Japanese cities at the same time. In this case, Shibuya and Kyoto. Every film, it's another city! Truly, a strange, strange genre, especially for the Japanese. Maybe it's like the Brits making movies about the Blitz. Except that the guy doing most of the damage is, well, sort of, kind of the "good guy." Hmm, weighty metaphor there.
